The UN's Food and Agriculture Organization has outlined their first global standards for aquaculture, after four years of debate on the issue. The guidelines were adopted by the UN sub-committee on Aquaculture, and although the guidelines are not binding, they will provide a framework for certification for aquaculture producers globally.
The guidelines drafted by the UN function to regulate a multitude of issues related to aquaculture. Sometimes called aquafarming, aquaculture refers to the production of fin fish, plants or shrimp in fresh or salt water under controlled conditions.
