We at FarmPlate are thrilled to have a first lady in The White House who cares enough about public health to make food a priority. She has made great strides over the past four years to put more nutritious food in schools, promote growing your own and encourage kids to be active. Do you think she's doing enough? Any suggestions for her next four years in DC? Just how much leverage does Michelle Obama have? Feel free to leave notes in the comment section below.
Take Part has some thoughts on the matter. Check out this excerpt from an article on their website:
Food reform—specifically reducing the ballooning childhood obesity rate—was a priority of the First Lady and the President from...

A few weeks ago, as I was reflecting and brainstorming while munching on an apple in the sustainable living library at the Upper Valley Food Co-op in White River Junction, Vermont, I came across a children’s book called The Story of Johnny Appleseed, written and illustrated by Aliki. Since my five-month-old daughter was with me, I was delighted to find such a gem and decided to read it to her. As I recited the story aloud, the memories started to flow as I remembered when my Grandmother and Mother had read the story to me. I recalled how Jonathan “Johnny Appleseed” Chapman was a peacemaker. He lived a simple life, spreading seeds of love. He cherished food and...

The Farm Bill is a hefty piece of legislation with incredibly broad implications for food accessibility, economic viability of small farms, and a host of programs that impact local food systems across the country.
The Environmental Working Group (EWG.org) has brought together a long list of environmental experts, celebrity chefs, and other leaders to work for a better Farm Bill. Together, they have put together an open letter to Congress and delivered it to every member in anticipation of the Senate debate on the bill.
They are urging Congress to cut crop insurance subsidies and redirect that money into vital investments in nutrition, healthy food and conservation programs. And they...

By now, everyone has heard that celebrity chef Paula Deen has Type 2 Diabetes. Anyone can get Type 2 diabetes, according to the website WebMD.com, but there are certain risk factors that make it much more likely. Diet is one of them.
It’s hard to see how Deen could continue promoting her fattening recipes to her viewers for the past three years, during which time she knew she had contracted a disease that has become a national crisis, particularly among children. Which begs the following question: why come out with the news now? Many are saying that it might have something to do with Deen getting paid by the diabetes treatment company Novo Nordisk to promote one of their drugs.
Let’s be...

Looking around an elementary school cafeteria, it is impossible to ignore the images of Spiderman, Justin Bieber, kittens and rainbows stamping each child’s lunchbox. Although in the past lunchboxes have been considered a grade-school commodity, they are bursting their way into the adult world as people realize that a waste-free lunch means more than eating everything on your plate.
To truly reduce our meals’ carbon footprint, we need to consider not only how food is produced, but also how we’re packing it. According to the New York Times, sales of environmentally friendly back-to-school products are up just about everywhere. At the Container Store, the increase is 30 percent over last year...

Naked Chef Jamie Oliver's new prime-time reality show Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution premiered on ABC last week to high ratings. The show chronicles Oliver's attempt to revamp eating habits in Huntington, West Virginia, a community that is one of the most statistically unhealthy in the U.S.
Oliver is a Food Network chef, healthy food advocate and TED prize winner. In the first two episodes, he tackles the Huntington cafeteria lunch menu, quizzes elementary students on their knowledge of vegetable basics and attempts to break one family of their reliance on deep-fried foods by introducing healthy recipes.
