"There are two things you must see today: piglets and treehouses," said Josh, our tour guide. Sounds like fun, right? The young boys girls on the farm tour with me were ecstatic! And so our exploration of D Acres of New Hampshire Permaculture Farm & Educational Homestead began. Joshua Traught, executive director and farm manager at D Acres, led our small troupe through the woods, down narrows paths, in and out of greenhouses, treehouses, outdoor kitchens and beyond.
This is how I spent my afternoon on Sunday, May 6th, and a splendid afternoon it was! As implied by their full name, D Acres is a not-for-profit permaculture farm and educational homestead in Dorchester, New Hampshire, right...

While I used to love cooking very involved meals (not necessarily fussy, just time-consuming), with three children, a busy husband and did I mention launching a business, time is one thing that is no longer part of my daily vocabulary.
For that reason, of all the upcoming holiday suppers, I am really looking forward to Thanksgiving. Simple recipes, lots of helping hands and time for cooking will define the day.
Here's what each of us at FarmPlate will be serving up next week for this traditional harvest supper:

If you find yourself on Route 113A in North Sandwich, New Hampshire this summer, look for the sign with a cow on it. Turn onto the dirt road into the dark woods and keep following the signs. Watch for bears, moose and glimpses of the White Mountains, but whatever you do, don’t turn back even if you think you are lost! Suddenly you will emerge from the woods to discover a rustic building flanked by grazing cows and a beautifully landscaped garden. This is Sandwich Creamery.
The Creamery is best known for its ice cream, which draws dozens of visitors down this rocky, rutted path on hot summer days. I came for the cheese.
Tom and Lisa Merriman have been making cheese at this remote location...

New Hampshire organic yogurt company Stonyfield Farm has launched a new initiative to support organic farming- the Stonyfield Organic Farmers Grant-a-Wish Program.
Judges from Stonyfield and Organic Valley have chosen six finalists from an original pool of 72 farmers from across the country. Their selection was based on the level of innovation, adherence to organic farming practices and overall environmental impact of the farmers' proposed projects. Consumers can now check out the finalists’ own stories and videos on Stonyfield’s Facebook page and vote for their favorite project. In March, Stonyfield will distribute $31,000 in grant money to the finalists based on voting results. There will...

The Senate passed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act on Thursday, a bill that will provide $4.5 billion to make school food more nutritious. The New York Times reports the bill was passed unanimously by the Senate and will now move to the House of Representatives, where it is also expected to pass. The current school nutrition legislation will expire on September 30.
The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act will continue the existing nutrition programs in schools and add the first non-inflationary increase in funding since 1973.
The funding will allow schools to update their menus with healthier choices and set higher health standards that include more fruits and vegetables and less salt and fat....

Have you heard? There's a new cheese on the block. If you haven't yet met Cremont, you're going to want to get to know this American original. But you'll have to wait a few days--the cheese is sold out until next week.
Cremont is the latest release from Vermont Butter & Cheese Creamery in Websterville. A mix of fresh cow's and goat's milk with a hint of fresh cream, the newcomer has been described by one fan as tasting as if Vermont Creamery's Bonne Bouche and ricotta had had a baby. This is a perfect cheese for cheese novices—the goat flavor is elegant, not aggressive, and the texture is creamy and light, almost like a mousse.

The U.S. Justice Department and the U.S. Department of Agriculture are joining forces to investigate potential violations of antitrust laws in the agriculture industry. Attorney General Eric Holder and USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack traveled to Iowa last week speak to farmers, ranchers and industry leaders at a public meeting.
The first of five workshops on competition and consolidation in the agriculture industry took place on Friday in front of a crowd of about 700 people.
The central question to tackle is, Holder said, “Is today’s agriculture industry suffering from a lack of free and fair competition in the marketplace.”
Public relations executives from Monsanto Company were also at the...

Listing nutritional information on fast food could affect what parents choose for their children to eat, reports a new study to be published in the February 2010 issue of Pediatrics. The study, "Nutrition Menu Labeling May Lead to Lower-Energy Restaurant Meal Choices for Children," was conducted at a pediatric practice in Seattle, Washington.
The 99 parents who participated in the study had children aged three to six years old. Participants were given photos of McDonald’s food and asked which menu items they would pick for themselves and their children. Half of the group was given menus labeled with the number of calories in each selection.
Parents who saw the calorie-labeled food items...
