Can you tell us a bit about your farm and how you got started?We are a small diversified farm that sells vegetables, flowers and herbs through farm-shares and local venues. Along with my husband, Silas, and son, Jacob, I raise chickens, turkeys and dairy goats as part of our holistic approach to tending our land. We use absolutely no pesticides, organic or otherwise.

Please provide some brief background information about your farm — in your opinion, what makes it special or unique?
Wild Garden Seed is a certified organic seed company based in Philomath, OR that breeds and grows open pollinated varieties of lettuce, mustards, kale and chicory among many others. The farming community and its supporters are an inspiring facet of being here, but the breeding work done on-site everyday is a unique and dynamic process. The politics of seed crop production are treacherous which makes this an exciting time to be involved in organic and open pollinated seed crop production.

Tell us a more about your farm and how you got into farming:I grew up in New York City. After college, I moved a little bit upstate, to the farm my grandfather started in 1913. My father had kept it running at a loss over the years.
What did you do before you started farming? Have you found it be an easy transition from your previous job?I was a painter. I studied art in school, and I originally moved back to the family farm to paint. Once I started planting vegetables, and raising chickens, I could not go back. The farm was like a living, changing work of art, and it took me captive.

Give a description of your farm and how you got into farming:
We currently run a 100-member CSA and do two markets in Chicago. Our farm is certified organic, and we pay special attention to soil health, nutrient-dense plants and the natural environment around us.
What did you do before you started farming? Have you found it be an easy transition from your previous job?
Alison was/still is a writer, and Alex was a bike messenger, later a restaurant manager.

A weekend of beautiful, warm weather in early August set the stage for a lively convergence of over 1,400 farmers, gardeners and foodies in Western Massachusetts last weekend.
